Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord — Platforms, Release Date, Everything to Know

If you’re a fan of anime-based JRPGs, there’s a chance you’ve at least heard of Fairy Fencer F. It originated an entire console generation ago, so there’s also an equally good chance you haven’t. But there has never been a better time to jump into the action, as the sequel, Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord, is almost upon us! Here’s everything you could possibly need to know about this music-based, tactical JRPG!

When Can You Play It?

Idea Factory International has announced a release date for Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord. This sequel to 2013’s Fairy Fencer F and Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force will be available for PS4, PS5, and Switch on April 25, 2023. A PC version via Steam will be released a month later, on May 23, 2023. It will release just shy of ten years since the original game released for the PS3.

Limited vs. Standard Edition

In addition to a release date, we now have more information about the different versions of the game you can purchase. For those interested in pre-ordering the limited edition of Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord, pre-orders will open on February 28, 2023. Here is what you can expect to receive with the limited edition:

• a physical copy of the game with a reversible cover
• a steel game case
• a hardcover art book, containing an additional short story
• the game’s original soundtrack
• a music book
• a collector’s box
• an exclusive trading card

What is Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord?!

Idea Factory International has released the opening trailer for Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord, which you can view above. In a press release, the game’s story is described as all-new, with multiple routes to explore. It was not immediately clear if this sequel relies on the original Fairy Fencer F, or if it is independent.

Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord boasts a series of new mechanics, including ‘muses,’ which provide a new and exciting way to support allies … and perhaps even enemies. There’s also a brand new tactical RPG battle system that can emphasize the importance of strategy on the battlefield.

Fairy Fencer F was initially released for the PS3 in 2013. It received an updated version in 2015 entitled Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force for the PS4.
