Games with more complicated interfaces tend to play a little better with a keyboard and mouse, while games that put more emphasis on certain snap reactions edge more toward controllers. Have you ever tried to play Devil May Cry with a keyboard? It’s awful. The best possible solution for a PC game is to have support for both kinds of control, but since Valheim is a crafting game, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s keyboard-only. So, does Valheim have controller support?
Answer: Yes! Well, mostly. The game’s page on the Steam store does list “partial controller support,” and indeed, you can plug any modern controller into your PC and Valheim will detect it. Xbox One, PS4, Switch Pro, whatever. Even if it’s not natively supported, Steam’s controller input can act as your middleman. Valheim also has dedicated button maps already, so you don’t need to worry about piecing together your own controller layout.
Does Valheim have Controller Support?
However, it’s important to remember that Valheim is still very much in early access, which means while you can play with a controller, it’s not exactly a feature in its optimal form just yet. Reddit users have been reporting some bugs while trying to play with a controller, especially when trying to use a PS5 DualSense controller. Users have also been reporting problems with trying to drop items or deconstruct buildings and constructs. While there is a button re-mapping function in the game’s options for those who want to customize their layouts, some reports have said that the game isn’t registering changed inputs, which can be annoying.
Still, the good news is that since the game is still in early access, these bugs will more than likely be fixed at some point. For the time being, you can play with a controller, provided you don’t mind jumping through a couple of hoops and weathering a couple of bugs.
