Octopath Traveler was an unexpected hit for Square Enix when it launched as a Nintendo Switch exclusive back in 2018. It originated the HD-2D art style, a style that games like Triangle Strategy and Live A Live have also used. Now, Square Enix has officially announced Octopath Traveler 2, a sequel that seeks to build on everything the original game set up. But when will fans have the chance to play this new JRPG?
When Does Octopath Traveler 2 Come Out?
Octopath Traveler 2 will launch on February 24th, 2023. It shares this date with a few other notable releases also revealed at the September 2022 Nintendo Direct, including Atelier Ryza 3 and Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe.

The game also has a special Collector’s Edition that comes with an art book, a CD soundtrack that includes unique arrangements not included in the full soundtrack, and eight mini-busts of the main characters. Pre-orders for the Collector’s Edition are available now.
What’s It About?
Octopath Traveler 2 is a sequel in name only, as it follows a new band of adventurers in a new world as they set out on personal journeys of discovery, redemption, and revenge. The new eight heroes are Hikari, Agnea, Partitio, Osvald, Throne, Temenos, Ochette, and Castti.
The reveal trailer from the September 2022 Nintendo Direct showed off how Square Enix has elevated several of the game systems from the original game. There’s now a day/night cycle, and each hero’s Path Action changes depending on the time. The main characters will also have intertwining stories now, a feature the first title lacked.
Square Enix later outline more features in a blog post on their own site, including the return of the Break and Boost systems and the introduction of new, powerful attacks called Latent Power. They also confirmed that Octopath Traveler 2 will elevate the HD-2D art style, bringing in more detailed environments, emotive sprites, and varied camera angles.
Octopath Traveler 2 will release for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation consoles, and Steam on February 24th, 2023.
