The VCT Stage 2 Challengers 2 Finals was held this weekend, and fan favorites Sentinels triumphed over the competition. The pure North American squad had to play against 100 Thieves, Cloud9 Blue, and twice against Version1 to secure the throne and the first seat to Masters Reykjavík held in Iceland. Premonitions of Sentinels early demise stemming from their poor performance in Stage 2 Challengers 1 can safely be debunked with Sentinel’s first-place finish and the $40,000 cash prize.
Although the scoreboard says that Sentinels blew out Version1 in a 3-0 sweep, each game was hotly contested. Sentinels won Game 1 on Bind 13-8, Game 2 on Haven 13-9 and Game 3 on Icebox 13-9. All these games were separated by just a couple of full buy rounds, and credit has to go to Version1 for climbing through the loser’s bracket to retry their luck against their round 1 opponents.
Sentinels actually locked in their spot for Masters 2 when they defeated Cloud9 Blue on Saturday. Cloud9 Blue, also heavy favorites to contest Sentinels, lost to Version1 in a close slugfest and consequently lost their place in Masters 2. Masters 2 in Iceland will be taking place during the last week of May starting on the 24th as the League of Legends MSI tournament will be held at the same venue in the meanwhile. Congratulations to both Version1 and Sentinels for securing spots at Masters 2 in Reykjavík and for representing North America at this international bout!
