When the PS4 and Xbox One launched nearly a decade ago, both consoles were the first to allow users to stream their gameplay directly through platforms such as YouTube, UStream, and Twitch. Due to launching their own streaming platform, Mixer, Microsoft removed Twitch streaming from Xbox consoles. Since Mixer closed in 2020, Microsoft will now allow Twitch streaming to return to the Xbox.
Streaming Xbox Games is Now Easier Than Ever
A new blog post from Xbox Software Engineer Brenna Duffitt details how Twitch integration has improved during its absence. To start streaming, players first have to access the Xbox guide and navigate to the Capture and Share tab. Next, select Live Streaming. A QR code will appear, allowing you to link your Twitch account.
After the account is linked, you’ll be able to begin streaming. The stream can also be customized directly from the Xbox. Settings such as the stream title, audio levels, and the game being played can all be changed from the options panel. This return of the Twitch app comes after the demise of Microsoft’s streaming service Mixer.
Mixer was known for the paying popular content creator and personality Ninja to stream there exclusively. Unfortunately, the site couldn’t maintain a consistent viewer base and ended up shutting down. With Twitch, Xbox players once again have a reliable way to share their gameplay with others.
