This Pizza Tower Jump Scare Will Terrify The Be-Cheesus Out of You

Peppino does not lose staring contests.

Pizza Tower takes a lot of cues from the games and cartoons of the early 2000s in its gameplay and art. You know what else was popular in the early 2000s, though? Screamers. You never knew when you’d be beset by a jump scare in the early 2000s internet, which is probably why Pizza Tower features a quick, yet striking screamer of its own that will terrify the be-cheesus out of you.

Not long after Pizza Tower’s release, players immediately took to deconstructing and exploring its incidentals like menus and idle animations in search of amusing easter eggs. One easter egg that was swiftly stumbled upon was discovered right after the opening animation, on the game’s file select screen.

When you first boot up the game, Peppino sits in the darkness of his restaurant, with the spotlight only turning on and revealing the file selection after you press a button. If you don’t press anything, Peppino will continue to sit in darkness as the BGM plays, and if you leave him sitting there for about 40 seconds, he will… lose patience with you.

Wuh-Oh

If left alone on the file select for too long, Peppino will suddenly lung at the camera, producing a strange screaming noise, before the screen is subsumed in darkness and the game quits out a moment later. Incidentally, the scare only triggers if you leave Peppino in darkness. If you press a button to turn on the light and bring up the file select, he won’t do the scare no matter how long you leave him idle.

The speed and sound of the scare are very reminiscent of classic screamers, which is why some users have admitted to telling their younger siblings to try it without warning them of what’s coming. It seems a proud tradition of harassing your siblings with scary imagery has managed to endure through the years. How fun.
