Does The Last Spell have Multiplayer?

In a similar vein to Frostpunk or Darkest Dungeon, The Last Spell is all about making the best of an objectively bad situation. Humanity has been confined to a handful of small towns, while the remainder of the world is covered in evil magic mojo, from which terrible monsters venture at night. You’re gonna have your hands full just repairing your town after every onslaught, so there isn’t exactly a lot of room for inter-town socialization. On that subject, does The Last Spell have multiplayer?

Does The Last Spell have Multiplayer?

Let’s just get this out of the way: The Last Spell is a single-player experience. There are no multiplayer features, either cooperative or competitive. While it is a strategy game and co-op strategy games are hardly out of the ordinary, there are a few quirks that render this game incompatible with that kind of design sensibility. For one thing, it’s a turn-based strategy game. It’s not like Starcraft where you need to manage a bunch of things on the fly; the game proceeds precisely at the pace you want it to. Trying to make a game like this multiplayer would be like trying to put multiplayer in a Final Fantasy game. It just doesn’t work.

Secondly, the devs are a fairly small team. The Last Spell only just began its Early Access period recently, and they’re funneling all of their resources into properly realizing the single-player campaign and gameplay loop. Trying to tack multiplayer on there would take up manpower they can’t really spare right now.

However, as the game is in Early Access, nothing is impossible. While the devs have affirmed on the Steam forums that they’re not planning on adding co-op functionality at the current stage of development, they are listening to user comments, so perhaps they could cook something up once the meat of the game is properly finished.
