Spamming Voice Lines is no Longer Possible in Overwatch 2

HEROES NEVER DIE! HEROES NEVER DIE! HER—

It’d seem as if life is a little less painful for Roadhog players. Because now, it seems to be impossible to spam characters’ voice lines to an annoying degree in Overwatch 2. To be clear: you can still spam lines, and to some it could still become annoying. But, there is now a brief cooldown applied to voice lines.

In a thread posted to r/Overwatch 2 on Reddit, user u/maxkhor95 shared a brief video demonstrating the voice line cooldown in action. In this video, they play as Doomfist and attempt to spam the voice line “and they say chivalry is dead,” but supposedly they’re limited by the cooldown. To be completely honest, the cooldown doesn’t seem to prevent the user from spamming voice lines. If there is a true difference now with the cooldown in effect, that tells me it was once worse. And if so, that damages me emotionally.

In the thread, other players shared their take on this new cooldown. Some were against the change, while others were more welcoming of something that’d make their Overwatch 2 experience less annoying.

“Hey a change nobody asked for. It’s not like squelch chat hasn’t always been an option,” said one user, while another rejoiced the change. “Good, it was stupid anyhow. I’m not sure how many people I’ve muted over the course of the game, but it’s a lot.”

Annoying Yourselves, But Not Other Players

It should be noted that until now, some players have uncovered that spamming voice lines made it so that you could hear your own spam, but other players could not. If the above video by Marblr is any indication, then there was a hidden ‘mute’ timer that would increment every time players used voice lines.

If they used more than three voice lines without waiting for the timer to run out, they would be effectively muted to other players, despite remaining audible to themselves. So, the big change here seems to be the cooldown warning that notifies players of the time remaining until they can use another public voice line. You can annoy yourselves, but you can no longer annoy other players, and I think that’s just neat.
