Sonic Frontiers Shows First Gameplay in New Trailer

Gotta Go Fast.

It’s time to go fast.

Today, SEGA showcased a short teaser for the upcoming Sonic Frontiers. It’s the first time we’ve seen gameplay since the announcement trailer debuted in late-2021.

In the trailer, courtesy of the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel, we’re shown more of this brave new world. It starts off with Sonic running through a forest, which might be the only part of this trailer that isn’t new. Immediately, we’re shown a stunning vista of flowers with what looks to be relics of an old civilization as Sonic blazes past.

It’s then that Sonic is shown running in place on what seems to be a hamster wheel, which seems to be mapping out his surroundings. This could be the Sonic: Frontiers equivalent to territory discovery a la Assassin’s Creed or Far Cry. In a hard cut, we see some combat against some seemingly robotic enemies, implying Dr. Eggman is back to his old tricks. It’s worth noting here that the combat looks smooth, with the classic homing system making a triumphant return here.

This simply wouldn’t be a Sonic game without some rail grinding. But, the world surrounding these rails looks beautiful. I am hoping for plenty of segments in the game that will showcase more of these aesthetically pleasing environments. It’s then that we see more combat, this time against a gigantic mech, which Sonic dispatches with ease. All of this is set to a hauntingly stunning piano melody by series veteran Tomoya Ohtani.

Sonic Frontiers is looking to be a phenomenal entry to this age-old franchise. If this is SEGA’s answer to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Kirby and the Forgotten Land, we’re in for a treat. Sonic Frontiers will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
