Review: Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes Tests Your Patience

A classic RPG feel with strategy involved

When we first came across Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes it was when we were younger. Our short attention span couldn’t comprehend how to effortlessly win a battle through strategy. The graphics looked beautiful, the characters seemed fun to interact with, and the monsters were cool to our young minds. As we got older, puzzle games became easier and we started to understand how the game functions and how to progress. Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is a puzzle strategy game that’s going to leave you confused if strategy games aren’t your cup of tea, but tempted to learn more about the story.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes First Impressions

We’re coming into this game with absolutely no knowledge of the Might & Magic franchise. The video games came out in the 90s and spin-offs continued to make way on the market. Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is a spin-off and was released on Nintendo DS in 2009. The version we’re playing is based on the same game with improved graphics known as the Definitive Edition. Our thoughts coming into this franchise as a complete newcomer with zero experience? Grindy as hell. Hard as hell. Only if you’re bad at strategy games.

The game introduces the player to a world divided into factions known as The Haven, Inferno, Sylvan, Academy, and Necropolis. Each faction has its own set of problems, but what ties everyone together, are demons causing chaos. We meet our characters and come across the elves at a campsite. Anwen, the daughter of the elves’ faction, is on a mission to destroy the demons after they destroyed her home and killed her father. We’re thrown into battle learning the ins and outs of using troops in battle strategically to kill opponents. This is a turned-base game that has you color-matching troops in order to form attacks. After two turns on your side, it’s your opponent’s turn, and the main objective is to get your troops past the enemies to kill them.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes Final Thoughts

We played for around twenty minutes during the first real battle and man was it complicated. Our first thought as gamers was to defeat the enemy, which is why it took so long to complete. Your objective should be to get past the enemies to reach the yellow barrier behind them. You’re repeatedly thrown into these scenarios and after mission-after-mission, it becomes a chore. The storyline follows our heroes through different factions, however, the tone of the game is pretty much the same. Follow a pre-determined path, kill enemies, talk to people, start a quest, and end a quest.

It’s a game that’s perfect for people who enjoy strategy puzzle games. There are plenty of people out there who love games like these; the franchise is extremely popular and players are loving the graphic updates and improvements. Experiencing this game as someone with no insight over the franchise and just wanted to kill some time, go for it. It’s a solid game for the price and once you figure out how to defeat the enemies strategically, you’ll enjoy it.
