Predecessor vs Paragon Overprime – Which One Is Better?

Once Fortnite took off, Epic gave up on the similar-concept Paragon, which is why it released the assets. Then, two studios competed to make better games using those assets.

If you like multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games, you’ve probably run into Paragon: The Overprime and Predecessor. It’s a bit confusing — they both look similar and use the same art. When looking at Predecessor vs. Paragon Overprime, which one is better, and which should you choose?

Why do Predecessor and Paragon Overprime Look the Same?

Epic Games released the original Paragon’s assets. While two separate studios designed Predecessor and Paragon Overprime, they did so using the same assets under this licensing and release. Netmarble developed Paragon Overprime, and has permission from Epic Games to use the name.

Predecessor vs. Paragon Overprime: What’s the Difference?

Some of the differences between these two games are obvious through gameplay, but others are more subtle. Here’s a comparison for various game elements:

  • Predecessor tries to be its own game, whereas Overprime tries to be more like its namesake.
  • There are more heroes available in Paragon: The Overprime.
  • Overprime has one tower in each lane, but Predescessor has two. This gives Paragon Overprime a faster pace.
  • Paragon is free; Predecessor is paid (for now — it will become free to play).
  • Paragon has a travel mode (ports, or portals) and Predecessor doesn’t.
  • Paragon may not be released on consoles, but Predecessor is planned for console release.
  • As with other gaming communities like DOTA and COD, you don’t want to play Predecessor if you don’t want to play rough. If a brutal community isn’t your thing, consider trying Paragon Overprime instead. That said, Paragon Overprime still has its issues and neither community seems to be moderated well on Discord. The Predecessor team is noted for being less communicative with their community than Paragon: The Overprime’s team.
  • Fans see Overprime as more innovative than Predecessor and has more fast-paced action.

It’s worth noting that many MOBA players actually enjoy playing both Predecessor and Paragon Overprime, so if this hasn’t convinced you one way or another or a subscription fee isn’t a big deal to you, try them both!
