Voltorb was one of the very first Pokémon I ever laid eyes upon, way back when the kids in my school first started getting into collecting Pokémon cards. I always thought it was a little sad that Voltorb never got much exposure in the franchise, considering it literally takes the form of its most iconic object. Since Pokémon Legends: Arceus has proven itself to be a place for experimentation, it seems the developers have decided to give this long downtrodden Pokémon a little love.
On the official Pokémon Twitter and YouTube channels, a new trailer has revealed Hisuian Voltorb for Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Apparently, Hisuian Voltorb was hiding out in Ball Guy’s missing Poké Balls, which is entirely too many balls for a single sentence. This medieval Voltorb is similar in appearance to its modern counterpart, adopting the coloration of a Poké Ball, but since old-timey Poké Balls have wood in their construction, this has carried over into Hisuian Voltorb.
Hisuian Voltorb Revealed for Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Unlike the Voltorbs we know and… tolerate, which are pure Electric types, Hisuian Voltorb is an Electric/Grass type, an extremely esoteric typing shared only by Rotom in its Mow form. In an additional departure from the norm, rather than being a seething sphere of perpetual explosive rage like modern Voltorbs, Hisuian Voltorbs are actually very friendly and sociable. You can even see a bunch of them gathering around the player in the trailer, eager to get to know them.
Of course, all of that exuberance often leads to Hisuian Voltorb accidentally letting off discharges of electricity, shocking anyone unfortunate enough to be standing nearby. And of course, they are still entirely capable of self-destructing. They wouldn’t be Voltorbs if they didn’t.
No word yet on whether Hisuian Voltorb will evolve into a distinctive form of Electrode, though I’d personally love to see Electrode’s distinctive grin paired with that woody color palette.
