Platinum Games CEO Speaks on the Failure of Babylon’s Fall

Learn what Platinum's CEO thinks of the game as it's servers will shut down next year.

Platinum Games is well-known for its catalog of single-play action games but earlier this year the company released Babylon’s Fall. The game was a departure from what Platinum Games fans were used to since it was a live-service multiplayer game that required an online connection at all times. It failed to find praise from critics or fans and never had much of a player base. As a result, the game will shut down next year. Recently, Platinum Games CEO Atsushi Inaba spoke in an interview about the game’s failure.

In an interview with VGC, Inaba made an effort to apologize to anyone disappointed by the game by saying, “…any disappointment that we might have caused for our fan base is something we feel extremely sorry about, the fact that we led our dedicated fans to feel that way as a developer.” Babylon’s Fall is not the only live-service game Platinum Games plans on developing.

Inaba told VGC that the company plans on learning from the mistakes made with Babylon’s Fall to make better live-service games in the future: “There’s a lot that we learned from this experience, and it’s not changed our future plans or outlook moving forward regarding doing live service games at all. Live service games are definitely something we do want to do and put our effort in moving forward.”

While work on Babylon’s Fall was shared between Square Enix and Platinum, Inaba admits that the game would have likely still had problems if Platinum were the only one developing it. “Keeping this answer limited to Babylon’s Fall would skewer the discussion I think, but similar to what I said, if you’re a developer and also the publisher, your role obviously does change. But it doesn’t mean that even if you have ultimate control of the title that you’re not going to have any frustrations in the long run, regardless of whether you are a developer or a publisher.”

The servers for Babylon’s Fall will shut down in February 2023. You can head to the game’s website here to learn more about the shutdown. If you’re a fan of live service games, you should check out the guides and articles in our Destiny 2 section.
