Niantic Announces Peridot, An Upcoming Real-World Adventure Pet Game

Raise and care for your own adorable virtual pets.

Niantic, the company behind the mobile sensation Pokemon GO and, more recently, Pikmin Bloom, has announced details about their next upcoming game. Peridot is a new AR game set to begin its soft launch testing phase in select markets.

Much like Pokemon GO and Pikmin Bloom, players in Peridot will need to venture out into the real world for an adventure. The objective is to find, care for, raise, and breed adorable unique creatures known as Dots. Players will raise Peridots (or simply Dots) from birth to adulthood while learning about them and developing bonds.

The species will rely on players to protect them from going extinct as they find themselves awakening in this strange new world. It’s worth noting that Dots cannot die in the game, and the gameplay centers around rewarding players for returning to and playing with their pets.

Players can collaborate with others around the world to breed one-of-a-kind creatures and “discover the infinite possibilities of Peridot archetypes.” Some Dots may resemble animals you’re familiar with, both real and mythical, like unicorns, dragons, cheetahs, rabbits, and more!

On Niantic’s blog, they released a 30-second announcement trailer for Peridot. There’s also an official website to sign up to if you want to stay up-to-date with the latest Peridot news as the soft launch approaches. You’ll need to enter a valid email address and reside in one of the yet-to-be-announced supported countries to be eligible for the beta. The beta will be available on Google Play and the App Store in select regions.

The game utilizes augmented reality technology to superimpose the digital Dots onto real-life environments that show up on your phone’s screen. Despite the recent popularity of NFTs and numerous attempts from corporations to integrate them into their newer games, Peridots, or Dots, for short, do not fall under this category.
