Magic the Gathering Reveals Street Fighter Cards

Magic the Gathering Reveals Street Fighter Cards

Nine Street Fighter characters are included in the set

The characters of Street Fighter have certainly made their way around the block over the years. Starting from their own game, they’ve crossed over into other games, gotten their own movies and cartoons, and a couple of them were even Power Rangers for a little while! Though, I have to say, out of everything Street Fighter could’ve possibly crossed over with, Magic the Gathering was pretty low on my list of expectations.

Wizards of the Coast, creators of the card game Magic the Gathering, have revealed a new line of Street Fighter-themed Magic cards. Included in the February MTG Secret Lair superdrop, nine Street Fighter characters have gotten officially-licensed cards with original art and unique abilities.

The nine Street Fighter cards included in the set are as follows:

  • Ryu, World Warrior
  • Blanka, Ferocious Friend
  • Chun-Li, Countless Kicks
  • E. Honda, Sumo Champion
  • Dhalsim, Pliable Pacifist
  • Ken, Burning Brawler
  • Guile, Sonic Soldier
  • Zangief, the Red Cyclone

The cards are all playable in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage game formats, though according to Wizards of the Coast Product Architect Mark Heggen, they’re primarily designed to be used in Commander format.

In an interview with IGN, Heggen said that Commander gels the best with the cards since the goal of that format isn’t necessarily to put the best deck together. He said that “if we make a card that leads to a certain kind of deck with a certain kind of attitude, it will find an audience and that audience will play that deck and enjoy that deck and have fun with that deck, and not simply because it’s the right power move.”

The Secret Lair Street Fighter set can be purchased on the official website until March 19th. You can get the regular set for $39.99 or a foil set for $49.99.
