Is King of Seas Single Player Only?

I’ve read enough One Piece to know that if you want to be a pirate king, you gotta be the strongest, fastest, most free-wheeling sailor on the seas. Translated to game logic, that means reaching a point where you’re strong enough to beat literally anything and anyone, and by design, such a thing can’t really happen in a multiplayer environment. This begs the question, is King of Seas single player only?

King of Seas is designed as a narrative-driven, procedurally-generated ocean conquest game, not unlike the classic Sid Meier’s Pirates. If your goal is to be the strongest pirate in the seas, that means you can’t really be held to standard against other pirates shooting for the same thing.

Is King of Seas Single Player Only?

King of Seas is a strictly single-player experience; there are no multiplayer modes present, competitive or cooperative, and as far as the devs are concerned, there won’t be any coming any time soon.

As a member of the dev team explained on the Steam forums, their primary focus in King of Seas was to create a large, procedurally-generated open-world RPG. There’s plenty of content in the game, so much in fact that there simply wasn’t any room or manpower to implement multiplayer functionality.

“We can assure you, King of Seas will have a big single player mode, with a rich story, quests, secondary activities and so on. We are not planning to add online multiplayer at all at the moment,” the dev member said on the Steam forums.

Remember, when developing a game with both single-player and multiplayer functionality, you gotta split your development priorities and manpower between both. Sometimes, a team’s vision for a game just doesn’t have room to accommodate both kinds of gameplay. If you’d prefer a multiplayer pirating experience, there’s always Sea of Thieves or Windward.
