Is Tower of Fantasy Pay to Win?

Does money make the world go 'round?

Whenever a new online multiplayer game comes out, many players cannot help but be a bit skeptical. We’re living in the age of microtransactions, after all, and that does unfortunately warrant a bit of heightened scrutiny. As Tower of Fantasy is a new game that’s growing quite quickly, the precise reach of its paid elements does bear explanation. So, is Tower of Fantasy pay to win?

Is Tower of Fantasy Pay to Win?

Tower of Fantasy is, first and foremost, a free-to-play experience. You can play through all of the game’s main and side questlines at no cost, and while there are a bunch of different in-game currencies, you do receive a steady supply of the ones that really matter by simply playing the game.

That said, Tower of Fantasy does feature a handful of paid features, and while they may not exactly be “pay-to-win,” they could be considered “pay-for-advantage.” That is to say, buying premium features doesn’t guarantee your success in the game, but it does give you a distinctive edge over free players.

Tower of Fantasy features five different in-game currencies, which can be obtained in the following ways:

  • Black Nucleus: Complete missions, obtain achievements, or explore the overworld
  • Gold Nucleus: Complete missions, obtain achievements, explore the overworld, or buy from the in-game store
  • Red Nucleus: Clear special missions and events or buy from the in-game store
  • Dark Crystal: Complete missions or obtain achievements. Also given out after game maintenance
  • Tanium: Buy from the in-game store

Tower of Fantasy features both a gacha system and a premium Battle Pass. Buying large quantities of premium currency does ensure more frequent rolls on the gacha, which rewards playable characters, new weapons, and upgrade items. The Battle Pass rewards the same kind of items, though obviously, the paid track rewards better items than the free track.

Generally speaking, a free player could conceivably get most, if not all of the same items as a premium player, but a premium player could get said items at a much faster rate, which can provide a tangible advantage.
