How to grow fungiwood in Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress is a game of hard work and grind, so if you foresee wood shortages as a problem, you will want to start this process now as it can take in-game years to provide for you. Fungiwood has no practical difference to regular wood, the only discrepancy is how it grows. Fungiwood grows underground, away from light. So for this to work you’ll need to do some digging.

The first step is to carve out the chamber that you’ll be using to grow your fungiwood. It must be a somewhat large area that is at least three z-levels in depth, but more may be desired. Make sure the bottom layer of this chamber is soil, where you could farm if you wanted to. Fungiwood won’t grow on stone and will need soil to flourish.

With the chamber ready, all you will have to do is wait. Floor fungus will spread on the soil. Eventually, that floor fungus will sprout little mushrooms or fungi. After a while, you will start to get fungiwood trees growing. At that point, you can cut them down and use the wood for your needs. At that point, fungiwood should be quite prevalent in your chamber and should be a reliable source of wood.
