Leveling up in RPGs is essential for, well, not dying later in the game. If you have a bunch of character, you will want to manage them accordingly in order for none of them to fall behind. The bigger the character selection, the bigger chances you have to confront any situation that is presented in front of you. But what happens if one of your units just won’t level up like the rest? Is it a gameplay mechanic or straight up a glitched unit that needs fixing? Well, let us find out today. Here is how to fix Vander not leveling error in Fire Emblem Engage.
How to Fix Vander Not Leveling Error
There is some good news and bad news. First, the bad news: there is no available fix for Vander not leveling up in-game. That’s a complete bummer, right? Well, not really. The good news is this is not an error at all. What do I mean? Well, you see, in every Fire Emblem game, at the start, you will receive some support units that will travel along the way with you. One of those will be a Paladin. The Paladin is a tanky and considerably stronger unit than your others, specially your main protagonist. However, this unit, in this case, Vander, will not level up in spite of getting rid of enemies by himself. Why is that?
Well, it is quite simple. When you start any game, you will face against small enemies that, in the long run, don’t pose a threat at all. However, since you are level 1 or 0, you will have a harder time trying to get rid of them. When you do, you will be awarded a small amount of XP, but that small amount is enough for you to level up, since the points needed to go from level 1 to level 2 usually are not that many.
However, if you want to level up from level 40 to level 41, for example, the amount of XP you will need is noticeably higher. Furthermore, the XP you receive from killing those small enemies will be the same, but instead of awarding you with a full level worth of XP, it will only fill up your bar by 1 or 2% of its XP requirement.
This is what happens with Vander. He is killing enemies that are way below his level, therefore, he is indeed leveling up, but in a very slow pace. How do you fix this? Well, how do you get more XP points in battle? Facing stronger enemies. The harder the enemies, the more XP points you will get by killing them. So, if you want to see Vander leveling up, you will have to naturally progress through the story until you encounter enemies that will give him a fight. That way, this “error” will be fixed.

So that’s pretty much it! I understand players being worried by not being able to level up Vander, since he is a very strong character in early game. But if you understand the FE traditions, then you will get that this is all intentional. Just continue playing the game and things will get back to normal. At least, leveling up wise.
