Can you Play Dwarf Fortress on Mac?

The new refurbished, updated and renewed version of the gaming classic, Dwarf Fortress, is available now on Steam for a new generation of players to enjoy what is a twenty-year project in the making. I can assure you that this game will keep you busy for a long, long time with an incredible amount of content and mechanics that will blow your mind, quite literally. Having said that, with the amount of anticipation this re-release of the game have gathered, many are wondering if they will be able to enjoy this game on the Mac, just like the original classic version of the game. Can you play Dwarf Fortress on Mac? Let’s find out.

Can you Play Dwarf Fortress on Mac?

Yes and no. You see, there are currently two versions of Dwarf Fortress available for you to download. On one hand, the classic one, and on the other, the Steam one, which has been updated in every way, specially graphic-wise. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you wish to see the glass half-full), Mac players will only be able to play the classic version that is available to download on Bay 12 Games official website. Regarding the Steam and refurbished version, only Windows players are able to play Dwarf Fortress right now. It is unclear whether this will be a permanent issue, or if macOS and Linux users will receive a full game release in the future. At least for the time being and the immediate future, if you are a Mac user, you won’t be able to play the new version of Dwarf Fortress, only the classic version.

If you are a Windows user, don’t miss the chance to enjoy this timeless classic, now updated with new graphics and gameplay mechanics. If you are a Mac user, I would wait for an official release, or go ahead and play the classic version, it is still very enjoyable albeit a little bit aged.
