Aggressive Winter Express Comp

Horizon, Seer and Valkyrie

The current season meta, seen often with pro players in the 2022 ALGS Pro League. It is the perfect Winter Express comp. Horizon and Valkyrie are perfect for this event due to their wide range of movability. Valkyrie can easily move out of any crossfire and reposition using height advantage, from the top of the train carriages to the surrounding area of Worlds Edge. With cracked armor, Horizon can reposition just like Valkyrie. Whilst it will be harder for players using Horizon to return to the train should they jump off, the Ult is a must use ability in the Winter Express LTM. As the Event is similar to that of Arenas, with a smaller map due to its 3v3v3 mode, the level design is narrow and claustrophobic.

The use of Horizon’s Ult on the outside of the train carriage will pull players to the carriage wall. Make sure to carry grenades as these will be crucial to use in the Black Hole. Placing the Black Hole on the outside of the carriage will mean that the enemies cannot break the Ultimate. A perfectly timed Horizon Black Hole with Seer’s Exhibition is one of the best aggressive plays in the game. The Exhibition will move with the train, and due to its size, it will locate all enemies trying to catch the Train. Use the Seer Ult for highly aggressive plays, combined with Horizon making it the perfect weapon to wipe teams with. The Exhibition’s placement is crucial. Placing it in the open makes it easy for the enemies to destroy.

Bangalore, Bloodhound and Fuse

Instead of Horizon, opt for Fuse. Whilst, this is a less picked Legend, Fuse will be fantastic on the Winter Express Event. The reason for this is the same as Horizon, due to the narrow level design of the train, players using Fuse can grenade stack onto a distracted enemy team. The only counter to Fuse is a Wattson Ult. With no Wattson, Fuse will do a lot of damage to teams with his Tactical only. You can play Fuse as both aggressively or more passively. To play passively, players can focus on doing Tactical damage against enemies that are low.

Bloodhound and Bangalore are the perfect aggressive comp to use in all game modes of Apex Legends. Demonstrated by G2’s Dezignful and Resultah. For players who are not confident on Fuse, trade him out for Horizon. The Black Hole acts similar to that of Fuse’s Tactical and Ultimate. With the combination of Bangalore’s smoke and Bloodhound’s Beast of the Hunt, players will not require the Digital Threat optic. The smoke allows for hyper-aggressive plays, pushing any teams in the train carriage, often leaving them defenceless.

Pathfinder, Octane and Revenant

A controversial Winter Express comp due to the Revenant pick however when played correctly this could be the most successful aggressive comp on Apex Legends. The combination of Octane and Revenant is still insane to this day, as proven by the playstyle of LouStreams, former Sentinels player. Obtaining Revenant’s Ult, combined with Octanes stim and Pathfinders excellent movement ability with his grapple makes them untouchable.

This is one of the fastest and most aggressive comps you can play in Apex Legends. All three characters have the ability to reposition quickly. Take down an enemy and reposition before getting cracked. With this comp, players can pick off enemies one by one from all ranges, close and far depending on the weapons used. When the time is right, pop that Revenant Ult and give your team a second life. Although the respawn time is quick, having the Revenant Ult will put you at an advantage to the other teams.

Defensive Winter Express Comp

Wattson, Newcastle and Crypto

We are seeing the rise of Crypto being used in the ALGS Split 1 Playoffs in both NA and EMEA. Whether or not this will translate into the use of Crypto in Apex Pub Matches is unknown but the use of Crypto will be extremely helpful in the Winter Express Event. The real use of Crypto for this event is to wait and perfectly time his Ult. It is likely that the other team will be playing a more aggressive comp, including Pathfinder, Octane, Wraith or Horizon. If this is the case, a well-timed Ult is key to winning the match. Players with this defensive comp will play slower, more patient and clinical with picks.

The use of Wattson and Newcastle is perfect for the Winter Express LTM. Shown as the great defensive duo of Apex, clearly demonstrated by The Guard and Team Liquid often in Pro League. The reason for this is similar to why players should use Horizon or Fuse in aggressive plays. The placement of Wattson’s Ult will be extremely hard for the other team to push you. Combined with Newcastle, your team will be un-pushable.

With its narrow level design due to the objective being on a train, Newcastle’s Tactical will be great here. Acting as the moveable Gibraltar Bubble, Newcastle’s Tactical Shield acts as the perfect ability to both push and hold a spot on the train. Although the Shield is breakable, players will not want to push. As they will get third-partied by the other team very quickly.

To add, his Castle Wall combined with Wattson fences will be impenetrable when placed inside a train carriage. Walls can be placed anywhere, including the open central platform of the train where the objective will appear for you to capture when the train is stationary. Because of this, Castle has the ability to slowly create a fortress as the game goes on, stunning enemies approaching the Castle Wall. What pushes Newcastle towards the number 1 defensive Legend for the Winter Express is his Ultimate ability to jump straight to his teammates.

Caustic, Crypto and Bloodhound

For players who do not want to use Newcastle or Wattson, Caustic is a great option. He has the defensive capabilities of Newcastle and Wattson, with the aggressiveness of Fuse and Horizon. His Caustic barrels make it harder for players to push the train carriages, similar to Wattson’s fences. The Ultimate does similar damage to Fuse, trapping the enemy in a small space and slowing their movement similar to an enemy caught in a Wattson fence. With a well-placed Ultimate, Bloodhound can move in, triggering his Beast of the Hunt to push the Gas. Crypto can start the sequence of Ultimates, stunning and damaging the enemy team shields, then followed by Caustic’s Ult and finishing with Bloodhound cleaning up the mess.

Rampart, Caustic and Seer

This will be the hardest comp to sell. For players who want to play defensively but do not want to use Wattson or Newcastle, Rampart is the Legend to pick. The reason for this is Rampart has the ability to create a fortress of her own. When placing Amped Covers, Rampart can limit the pushes of the opposition. Not only this but, as of Season 15, Rampart’s Minigun is one of the highest damage dealing Ultimates. Players will not be able to avoid the incoming damage from Sheila should the enemies be caught out trying to capture the objective when the train comes to a standstill.

The added use of Caustic will make Rampart’s Cover harder to push, making it as good as a fortress as using Wattson and Newcastle. The addition of Seer adds an element of aggressiveness. Seer has the Passive ability to see enemies at all times using his heartbeat sensor. Although, players should not use this the whole time as the game mode is likely to be fast paced from start to finish, Seer will allow players to know where and when to push enemies. With the ability to check if the enemy’s health is low by listening to the slowed heart rate of the enemy team in the Sensor, players can comm for Caustic’s Ult to go down on low health enemies. Finishing off a team using the Gas or pushing with Sheila.

All Round Winter Express Comp

For players who are solo queuing the new Winter event. The previous comps are designed for players who are communicating in the Legend loading screen. Or for those who are playing with their friends. The comps below are for players who are going into the game mode solo. This is based off the most likely picked Legends: Horizon, Wraith and Octane. Should your teammates pick these Legends players should use the comps:

Horizon, Bangalore and Bloodhound

Should your team choose Horizon, you can go all-out attack with the combination of Bloodhound or Bangalore. Depending on what your other teammate picks, for Bloodhound, pick Bangalore. For another scanning aggressive legend if Bangalore and Horizon are picked, choose Seer. For another aggressive gunsmith and mobility player if Bloodhound and Horizon are picked, choose Octane. These Legends are easily interchangeable and provide great mobility. For aggressive comps like these, players need to work together instead of going alone to get kills. Teamwork is key here for the mode takes place in such a small area that it will not be possible to play this mode alone (unless you are ItzTimmy or Aceu).

Octane, Wraith and Bangalore

Whilst Wraith may not be a good choice for this mode as there are other Legends who have better mobility, she will likely be picked by your teammates. If this is the case, use either Octane or Bangalore. These Legends can be played both aggressively solo and as a team. With the option to push or tactically fall-back using Wraith’s Portal, Octane’s Pad and Bangalore’s smoke. All of these Legends are easy to use, for Apex Legends beginners and casual players.
