To quote an armless Flash cartoon character, the modern April Fools’ Day is the day when the internet gets on the internet to make inside jokes about the internet. It can seem a little impenetrable to those out of the know (to say nothing of gullible people), but if you are in the know, it’s a source of sensible chuckles and eye-rollers. Here are the best April Fools’ Day 2021 pranks in gaming.
Best April Fools’ Day 2021 Pranks in Gaming
Here’s a few of the best April Fools’ Day 2021 Pranks in video games:
Overwatch
Overwatch isn’t exactly the most serious game at the best of times, but you can definitely say that the characters all have expressive, emotional faces and eyes. April Fools’ Day is not for that, though, which is why all the characters, not to mention multiple guns, have had giant plastic googly eyes superimposed over their faces.
Fortnite
With that whole GameStop stock fiasco a while back, the gaming and stock trading spheres have never been closer together. This is why the official Fortnite Twitter announced the addition of a classic guest character: Diamond Hanz, better known as the “stonks” guy. Because you demanded it!
Valheim
Valheim is still early in development, and there are any plans to allow players to play as any race besides humans, they haven’t been divulged. But if we could perhaps dream for a moment, wouldn’t it be fun to embrace your inner wild side as you venture out into the untamed wilderness? The devs sure seem to think so, which is why they posted a mockup on their Twitter of a potential new race: Deers.
NieR Replicant
The long-awaited remake of the original NieR is launching at the end of the month, but who cares about all that sword and sorcery rigamarole? Clearly, NieR was always meant to be a farming simulator, as a new trailer released by Square Enix clearly demonstrates. Though, amusingly, all that crop raising and fishing and such are actually in that game.
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft has received a special new update for April, though some of these new features seem oddly… familiar. You can play a mini-game called “A Fungus,” where players must find an imposter amongst themselves, temporarily reach the idealized version of their character with “Wand Vision,” or engage in a good old fashioned round of sea shanty singing.
