Team 17 Cancels Worms NFT Project Due to Backlash

Yesterday, publisher Team17 announced an NFT project based on the Worms series. The project would be a collaboration with Reality Gaming Group. There was a negative reaction to this announcement as NFTs themselves have been the subject of controversy. As a result, Team17 has canceled their Worms NFT project.

Video Games Studios Pressure Team17 to Cancel Worms NFTs

In response to Team17’s announcement, many video game studios released a statement condemning the NFT project. Aggro Crab Games, developer of Going Under, released a statement vowing to not work with Team17 on any future games. Playtonic Games, developer of Yooka-Lee, condemned NFTs and promised not to create their own. The official A Hat in Time Twitter account even chimed in on the controversy.

Because of the backlash, Team17 has now canceled their NFT project and released a statement explaining why. The company said, “We have listened to our Teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space.”

This is just one of the many recent NFT announcements in the gaming industry. Companies such as Konami and Ubisoft have released NFTs. An Ubisoft executive recently defended the company’s NFTs despite the fact that it has been a failure so far.
