Sword Art Online — as a franchise — is no stranger to exploring alternate story paths in its games. And, with the reveal of Sword Art Online Last Recollection, that trend doesn’t look to be ceasing anytime soon! In a press release sent by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the publisher announced a release date for this next iteration of Sword Art Online, in addition to details about its alternate story to the novels / anime!
Taking a Different Path
In previous Sword Art Online games, they have not shied away from asking what would happen if certain events played out differently than they do in the light novels by Reki Kawahara. For example, in Sword Art Online Hollow Fragment, the characters are able to explore the last twenty-five or so floors of Aincrad. In the light novels and anime, they’re unable to do this thanks to significant story developments.

In much the same way, Last Recollection is an alternate story path for the War of Underworld. According to the game’s official website, Last Recollection “boasts a brand new, original storyline that explores what would have happened if Kirito, Eugeo, and their allies didn’t meet their tragic end in The War of the Underworld.”
Release Date and Platforms
According to the press release, Sword Art Online Last Recollection is set for release on October 6, 2023. It will be available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. In addition, this entry to the long-running franchise coincides with its tenth anniversary. So, returning fans can likely expect a wealth of exciting surprises.
