Who is Sage in Sonic Frontiers

Sage sure is awfully close to SEGA

With every new Sonic game, SEGA attempts to give us a new unique character to get attached to. Whether they are a tough brawling red echidna, a brooding anti-hero black hedgehog, or a silver one, SEGA always wants to add to the Sonic pack. As the highly anticipated open world of Sonic Frontiers approaches, we are introduced in several trailers to a new seemingly human character with Sage.

Of course, we don’t know everything about Sage just yet, that’s part of the fun and mystery of playing Frontiers when it comes out. However, if you’re curious to know more about the powerful young girl, we’ll give you all the details we can.

Who Is Sage?

Sage is a mysterious young girl with strange abilities that Sonic first meets when washing up on the shores of the Starfall Islands at the beginning of Sonic Frontiers. She warns Sonic he should leave the Islands as soon as possible. Sonic however doesn’t heed her warning. Sonic wants to find his friends who are lost somewhere on the islands.

Whether Sage is completely a friend or foe remands to be seen. While she has been antagonistic in some ways, her mysterious past keeps us from knowing for sure if she’s as evil as Dr. Eggman or just misunderstood or troubled. In the Divergence Prologue video, Knuckles is still guarding the Chaos Emerald. When he gets teleported away he is captured by Sage after fighting giant metal robots she seems to be able to control.

While it seems quite clear that Sage will be one of the primary antagonists for Frontiers, you never know as sonic villains can often have changes of heart. She currently sees Sonic as a threat not just to Starfall Islands, but to the entire world. Sage believes its up to her to stop Sonic from destroying everything. Perhaps Eggman has just gotten into her ear a little too much. We shall see.

Character Creation and Concept

Frontiers producer Takashi Iizuka spoke a little bit about Sage in several online interviews. He believes her mystery directly ties in with Starfall Islands and the relationship between her and sonic will be the details and foundation to build towards learning more throughout the entire Frontiers game. Iizuka believes questions about why Sage is the way she is are very important as players discover more about her and the Islands as they play Sonic.

As the game nears release, we will no doubt learn more about Sage and who’s side she’s really on, and her true motives. Many fans have quickly taken to Sage and there are lots of fan art across social media already. Let’s just hope this female human character in Sonic won’t receive the legacy of the last human girl that was heavily promoted in a Sonic movie.
