Each NPC has a list of different preferences. Some NPCs prefer to live in different biomes. Some NPCs prefer the company of other NPCs. All of these factors go into determining the NPC’s happiness levels.

- Move-in Requirement: Starting a new world
- Description: Provides tips, shows recipes, and is sacrificed for Wall of Flesh

The Merchant
- Move-in Requirement: 50 silver
- Description: Sells basic tools and supplies
- Biome: Forest
- Likes: Nurse, Golfer
- Dislikes: Desert, Tax Collector, Angler
The Nurse
- Move-in Requirement: Increased health with a heart crystal
- Description: Heals player and removes buffs for a fee
- Biome: Hallow
- Loves: Arms Dealer

The Arms Dealer
- Move-in Requirement: Player has bullets or a gun in their inventory
- Description: Sells guns, bullets, and other ammunition

The Painter
- Move-in Requirement: 8 other NPCs have moved in
- Description: Sells paints, paintings, Jungle Pylon, Painting Tools

The Dye Trader
- Move-in Requirement: Player acquires a dye item and kills a boss, or acquired one strange plant
- Description: Sells Dye Vat crafting station, trades Rare Dye for Strange Plants

The Zoologist
- Move-in Requirement: 10% of progress made in Beastiary
- Description: Sells critter related items and a leather whip

The Golfer
- Move-in Requirement: Rescued from Underground Desert
- Description: Sells golf related items

- Move-in Requirement: Defeat a boss
- Description: Sells nature-related items, reports on Hallow / Corruption percentage

The Tavernkeep
- Move-in Requirement: Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu defeated and Tavernkeep is spoken to at the random location
- Description: Sells items that summon and help fight the Old One’s Army.

- Move-in Requirement: Found and spoken to in a Spider Cave
- Description: Can change player’s hairstyle and sell hair dye

The Angler
- Move-in Requirement: Found floating in Ocean
- Description: Gives fishing quests and rewards

The Goblin Tinkerer
- Move-in Requirement: Found and spoken to in cavern after defeating Goblin Invasion

The Witch Doctor
- Move-in Requirement: Queen Bee has been defeated
