Mega Ampharos Weaknesses and Raid Counters in Pokemon GO

Here's a list of the best Mega Ampharos counters in Pokemon GO so you can take advantage of those natural weaknesses.

Funny story, I actually didn’t know for a long time that Ampharos was Mareep’s final evolution. It normally looks nothing like a sheep, so why would I even draw that comparison? The resemblance is a lot clearer when Ampharos Mega Evolves, since it gains that fabulous main of wooly hair. Of course, with that fabulous mane comes increased stats and changed typing, so maybe don’t try to touch it. Here are Mega Ampharos’ weaknesses and Raid counters in Pokemon GO.

Mega Ampharos Resistances and Weaknesses

After Mega Evolving, Ampharos’ type changes from pure Electric to Electric Dragon. As such, its resistances break down like this:

  • Resistant to: Flying, Steel, Fire, Water, Grass
  • Double-resistant to: Electric
  • Weak against: Ground, Ice, Dragon, Fairy

The type change adds a lot of resistances and weaknesses to Ampharos’ makeup. Meanwhile, these are the moves Mega Ampharos has available in its kit.

Mega Ampharos Moves

Mega Ampharos Counters

While the addition of Dragon typing does boost Mega Ampharos’ stats considerably, and its base attack in particular, it does inflict it with a very particular weakness: Dragon type moves. Normally, a Dragon type Pokemon’s weakness to other Dragons would be mitigated by the mutual threat of its own Dragon moves, but unfortunately for Mega Ampharos, its only Dragon type move, Dragon Pulse, is locked behind an Elite TM, which means it can’t use it against you when it’s heading up a Raid.

List of Mega Ampharos Counters

  1. Garchomp – Dragon Tail/Outrage
  2. Rayquaza – Dragon Tail/Outrage
  3. Zekrom – Dragon Breath/Outrage
  4. Rhyperior – Mud-Slap/Earthquake
  5. Excadrill – Mud-Slap/Drill Run
  6. Salamence – Dragon Tail/Outrage
  7. Haxorus – Dragon Tail/Dragon Claw
  8. Palkia – Dragon Tail/Draco Meteor
  9. Dialga – Dragon Breath/Draco Meter
  10. Dragonite – Dragon Tail/Outrage

Because of this, one of the best possible choices to counter Mega Ampharos is Garchomp. As a Dragon/Ground type, it is uniquely qualified to exploit both Mega Ampharos’ Electric and Dragon typings. Garchomp isn’t weak to anything in Mega Ampharos’ kit, so without Dragon moves of its own, there isn’t much of anything Mega Ampharos can do to stop it.

Alternatively, Rhyperior or Excadrill can exploit Mega Ampharos’ weakness to Ground moves, provided you don’t mind them being weak against Fighting moves in the event Mega Ampharos tries Focus Blast. If you want Legendaries, Therian Landorus is your go-to guy thanks to its resistance to Electric moves and absurd base attack.
