How to Beat Sapscourge in Wild Hearts – Boss Fight Guide

Timber!

The idea of a living tree doesn’t sound that scary until you remember that A: trees are way bigger and sturdier than us, and B: they’ve been around way longer than us. If a tree ever became mobile, I guarantee you we’d have an enormous beast like Wild Hearts’ Sapscourge on our hands. Time to become a proper lumberjack! Here’s how to beat Sapscourge in Wild Hearts.

How to Beat Sapscourge in Wild Hearts – Boss Fight Guide

Sapscourge is one of the first large-scale Kemono you’ll fight in Wild Hearts, which means this is probably going to be a bit of a rough fight. Given the fact that it’s effectively a giant plant, its weaknesses are somewhat obvious, but it’s also surprisingly fast and mobile, not to mention a crackshot with its signature sap spit. If you’re coated in Sapscourge’s sap, you’ll be stunned for a moment, and won’t be able to dodge roll until it clears away. It’s only a few seconds, but those few seconds can be life or death, so be prepared.

Here’s a basic breakdown of what makes Sapscourge tick:

  • Wood Attribute
  • Soft parts located in the head
  • Weak to Fire Attribute and Ablaze, Fatigue, Frozen, and Entangled Ailments
  • Resistant to Wood, Water, and Wind Attributes and Poison Ailment
  • Most effective damage type is Slash

Unfortunately, at this point of the game, you probably don’t have any Fire Attribute weapons, so its biggest weakness is a no-go. In lieu of that, you want the strongest Slashing weapon you have, both to slash at its soft head and for another purpose we’ll get to in a moment. As for defense, all of Sapscourge’s attacks are Wood Attribute, so gear up with Wood-resistant armor like the Fresh Fern set.

The Battle

Sapscourge has two general moves in its playbook. Firstly, it’ll hurl itself around in pounces and rolls, attacking wide areas all at once. These can be avoided with a simple dodge roll, after which you can poke at its soft head. Though, before you do that, you may also want to take some time to attack Sapscourge’s tail. If you can cut its tail off, you’ll drastically reduce the area and effectiveness of its attacks, which can go a long way toward keeping you safe. You can also hold it in place longer by building a couple of Bulwarks on its sides after attacks, though they’ll only last until it attacks again.

Sapscourge’s second, more dangerous play involves launching its sap at you. As we covered, that sap will disable your dodge roll, which will leave you wide open to its body checks. However, there is a trick you can set up to restore your mobility. During the fight, set down several Karakuri Springs around the arena. In the event you’re coated in sap, bounce off a Karakuri Spring to instantly clear it away and get a boost of mobility in the process.

When its health gets low, Sapscourge will bust out its most dangerous moves. If it flies into a rage, it’ll begin leaking sap puddles as it rolls around, making the ground hazardous. It can also produce a large explosion of sap, coating you if you’re standing too close. Give it a wide berth when it’s about to attack, as even after it finishes an attack, it’ll follow up with a body slam before finally leaving itself vulnerable.

Keep attacking that soft head while setting up Karakuri defenses, and eventually, Sapscourge will spit his last sap. This would’ve been so much easier with a chainsaw…
