Evony Guide: Best Generals for PVP

Find the best generals to mount your attack or defense.

In Evony, PVP isn’t as simple as just picking the strongest possible generals and winning. You have to weigh whether it’s better to focus on maxing out a pretty good general through ascension or to chase the best possible general. Regardless of your choice, you’ll need a baseline for it.

Best Generals for PVPs in Evony

Generals have their own strengths and weaknesses, especially when they’re the centerpiece of your march build. A ground general may get devastated by a range focused opponent, for example. A general that’s good at attacking may not be good at defending. This could be for a variety of reasons, like most of their buffs being for attack instead of HP or defense boosts.

Attack Generals

Attack generals focus on boosting attack, HP, and/or troop size. This is coupled with the potential of their own strength and HP being high.

Ground Generals
  • Elise
  • Scipio Africanus
  • Alessandra

Elise provides a monstrous boost to HP while also proving a good boost to HP and attack. The issue is the attack boost is mostly only when you have a dragon. Alessandra is more well-rounded, offering good stats and boosts to all areas but not excelling at any. This gives you versatility, but will likely draw the battle out. Scipio gives you HP and attack boost, making your troops hit harder and able to take more damage. His issue is his poor ability to be a defensive general, as he doesn’t boost defense and is more attack oriented.

Ranged Generals
  • Simeon the Great
  • Alfred the Great
  • Princess Kaguya

With ranged, you want to focus on attack boosting to deal as much damage as you can from far away. Simeon and Alfred are amongst the highest, but it can take a lot of time and/or money to reach their full potential. Kaguya offers tremendous HP boosts to keep troops alive longer while also having good attack boosts, but can be a bit cumbersome to attain.

Mounted Generals
  • Martinus
  • Mordred
  • Hannibal

Martinus offers a massive boost for attack and HP. He’ll need a dragon to fully utilize his attack boost though. Mordred allows boosts of defense, to both mounted and grounded troops, letting you to mix up the march. He also can give a great boost to the attack of mounted on top of his defense boost. Hannibal is here partly because he’s a great general for HP boosts. The main reason is you’re able to rank him up quickly and cheaply. You can get him to rank 5 by the time you get others to 3 or 4. But once you start maxing others out, you may want to switch to someone like Zhao Yun or Gaius Octavius, who offer better stats but are harder to rank up.

Siege Generals
  • Ulysses S Grant
  • Napoleon
  • Philip II

Grant gives a boost with dragons on top of his standard boost of heavy attack boost. He allows for an increase in troop percentage plus defense at ranks three and four. He’s cheaper than Napoleon, who offers much the same utility, so that’s a bonus. Napoleon doesn’t need a dragon for his addition boosts though and offers addition boosts to siege machines. Philip is a mix, offering siege attack bonus and troop capacity increases, while having good stats of his own.

Defense Generals

Defense generals typically boost defense and HP. Some boost attacks to help wipe out attacking troops but typically focus on keeping your troops alive through the assault.

Ground Generals
  • Leonidas I
  • Soult
  • Trajan

Soult can use his boosts which offer great attack of 35% and good defense and HP gains to ground troops. Trajan is more rounded out, giving pretty good boosts to the stats instead of more attack oriented. Leonidas is about HP and attack, giving over 30% boosts to both.

Ranged Generals
  • Ly Thuong Kiet
  • George Dewey
  • Minamoto no Yoshitsune

Ly Thuong is one of the best keepaway generals, which is perfect for ranged defense. He causes traps to activate more so, even as the opponent advances, they may get slowed or defeated by traps laid out. This isn’t to say anything about his boosts to attack and defense, whittling away opponents health while protecting troops. George offers good HP boosts while boosting siege attack while defending, which can help if you have a good number of troops. Minamoto gives you great HP and attack boosts, but requires a lot of work or money to get maxed out.

Mounted Generals
  • Prince Eugene
  • Jadwiga
  • Queen Boudica

Eugene offers a bit of everything. Boosts to troop capacity, attack, defense, and HP. The gains aren’t huge, but being able to get a bit of everything helps a lot. Jadwiga you basically only want to use defensively. She boosts the attack of siege machines by 25% percent when she’s the main defender while increasing mounted troops attack regardless. Boudica has limited uses, like when your opponents attempt a full-on ground attack. Beyond that, she still offers some good gains HP and attack.

Siege Generals
  • Leo III
  • Tran Hung Dao
  • Septimius Severus

Leo can be used as booth a mostly siege march but also gives boost to any troops in-city. This allows you to add some ranged troops to assist. Hung Dao should only be used in a siege march, but he’s worth it for the 30% attack boost to siege machines. Severus is the same with being great for siege heavy marches. He gives a big boost to HP and attack for siege machines.
