Does Kratos Die in God of War: Ragnarok?

No. In fact, it could be argued that the opposite happened. For the first time, Kratos sees a path to the future that doesn’t involve bloodshed. In the final cutscene of God of War: Ragnarok, he is shown a path that involves him being worshipped and admired, rather than hated and feared. So, while Ragnarok does leave things open for Kratos to potentially return, there’s also a chance that this is the end of his story. If so, the game ends on a touching note.

But, if he were to return in a future game, it would likely be set in a much different part of the globe. In any case, it looks like the titular God of War is able to experience some semblance of peace. It might be best for future games to follow Atreus / Loki, and give Kratos time to enjoy his retirement. After all, the ending also reveals the iconic “BOY” has become a “MAN” and is embarking on his own journey. Wherever the franchise goes from here, Kratos has earned for once some much-needed respite and happiness. He’s come a long way from the blood-soaked, rage-filled Spartan of the original trilogy.

God of War: Ragnarok is now available for the PS4 and PS5.
