The Unliving is, in spite of being described a rogue-lite action RPG game, pretty straightforward. Start a run, conjure spells, collect resources, raise an army and fight until you die, and repeat. However, between runs, there is a possibility to increase your chances for the future runs to be successful. And believe me, you’re going to want to do that. Without further ado, here is how to level up in The Unliving.
How to Level Up in The Unliving
Ok, so here is the deal. During your runs, you’re going to encounter several resources that will stick with even after death. There are 3 types, besides coins: Prima, Arkhe and Ash. Be sure to collect all the resources you can in order to level up different skills that are divided into different location in the Necromancer Laboratory (which is where you spawn after you die in the world, sort of like a hub), also known as the Citadel. In the same Citadel, there are four places you use to upgrade your abilities. Here is how to level up in The Unliving.
The Citadel
All along the Citadel floor, you will find runes that are connected through a white pathway. These are unlockables that you can exchange with Arkhe. They will upgrade the spells you conjure, as well as the sacrificial runes you can allocate to your minions. That means, that each spell you encounter will have an extra bonus, as well as the runes you can use whenever you sacrifice a minion (a mechanic that is used more than the spells themselves). There are a lot of these for you to unlock, so get going and collect Arkhe, you’re going to need it.
The Enchanter
The Enchanter, located on the left side of the Citadel, is where you will upgrade your Hex Weapons. That means the projectiles you shoot whenever you click the left mouse button. You will need to use Prima, which you encounter in the middle of your runs. In order to change Hex Weapons in the game, you will need to find a Work Station during a run and exchange Ash (you will pick it up while killing enemies) in order to change hex weapons or level up the one you have equipped.
The Lifespark Fabricator
The Lifespark Fabricator, located on the right side of the Citadel, is where you will upgrade your health bar. Just as the Enchanter, here you will spend your Prima in order to unlock the upgrades or other lifespark options. Once unlocked, you will be able to find the Lifesparks in your runs. They will activate once you lose a health phylactery.
The Ascension Throne
Finally, there is the Ascension Throne, and the last way to level up in The Unliving. Located in the middle of the citadel, upwards from where you find the Enchanter and the Lifespark Fabricator. Here you will use your Prima, again. You will notice now that the Prima and Arkhe are worth pretty much the same, at least in terms of number of upgrades. Anyway, you will use the Ascension Throne in order to upgrade the Necromancer himself, so it’s an upgrade that will be reflected immediately. These are the only upgrades that can be continually upgraded, so spend some time in your throne.
And that is how to level up in The Unliving. If you analyze a little bit of the way everything is distributed, you will understand that this game will make you play runs for quite a while in order to gather all the resources necessary to unlock everything. So be mindful of this while you plan your upgrade route. Good necromancing!
